The World Health Organization recommends that you breastfeed your baby initially one hour after giving birth and then exclusively for the first 6 months. Exclusive breastfeeding means only feeding your baby breastmilk and no other liquids or foods, including water or other milk. After around six months, babies can start metabolizing other foods so you can choose to slowly introduce complementary liquids and soft foods. Breastmilk will continue to be an important part of your baby’s diet for the first two years of age.
How do I know if my baby is full?
It can sometimes be difficult to tell whether your baby is getting enough milk. Here are five ways you can make sure your baby is eating well:
Baby feeds with long, slow sucks
You can see your baby swallowing
Baby seems satisfied in between feeds
When the baby is over 5 days old, you see 6-8 wet nappies daily
You can observe steady weight gain after the first two weeks
